When to move from chatting to meeting in person

Two people can text brilliantly for three weeks and feel nothing across a table. Chemistry does not transfer reliably through a screen, which is why the timing of the first meeting matters more than most people think.

The rough window

For most people, somewhere between a few days and two weeks of steady conversation is the sweet spot. Long enough to feel comfortable and confirm the person is real and considerate. Short enough that you have not built an imaginary version of them that a real evening cannot match.

There is no rule you must follow. Some people need longer to feel safe, and that is completely reasonable. What matters is that the delay is a choice, not a drift.

How to ask without pressure

  • Be concrete: a place, a rough day, a short activity. 'Coffee near the station on Thursday or Saturday?' is easier to answer than 'we should meet sometime'.
  • Keep it short. Ninety minutes, daytime or early evening, somewhere public. A shorter plan lowers the stakes for both of you.
  • Offer an easy exit. 'No worries at all if the timing is off' removes the pressure and usually gets a more honest answer.
  • Accept a no gracefully, once. Asking twice after a soft refusal turns a pleasant chat into an uncomfortable one.

Before you go

Meet in a public place, arrange your own way there and back, and tell a friend where you will be and when you expect to be home. These are not signs of distrust; they are simply what sensible people do on a first meeting with anyone.
